Huang Jin Ya

today's starter is a Huang Jin Ya, a yellow leaf green tea.

I aquired it on my recent vacation to Bangkok's Chinatown in a store called Jip Eu Ltd.
The Shop looks like a trading company office, where they would grade and pack their tea and sell it with their own wrappers, but they sell to private customers at the same time as well and have quite a selection of about 30 to 40 different kinds of chinese tea to choose from.

The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Kittichai are a very relaxed and friendly couple and the man was happy to drink some teas with me and John from "tea in the ancient world blog", who introduced me to this shop, while the Mrs. told us that she drinks one thermos bottle of tea per day, which she prepares in the morning, and she's good with that.

a little more tea is needed to bring out the full taste of the slightly baked green tea.

the aroma would be a bit sweet, with nutty tones that reminded me of a mix between long jing and a typical anji bai cha.

although sinensis sinensis green teas are often a bit subtle and soft, i quite like the aetheric notes in there that you could compare to anise or fennel seeds.

the leaves are really yellow and not so green.

here is a photo with less light, that's why the leaves appear more green, which they are not really.

the color of the brew is a nice yellow and no green.

daily Facts:

i really like the taste, the sweet baked and nutty flavor together with the slightly fruity and flowery of a typical Anji green make it stand out.

daily Rating:

4.2 / 5
